It is widely believed that General Motors Corporation faces bankruptcy because of the current state of the economy, failure to put people over profits when it comes to automobile safety (e.g., just think of the Ford Pinto to the Ford Explorer), failure to develop fuel efficient car of the future, as well as make quality cars. A new company plan proposes more job cuts and factory closures. These moves may get G.M. out of the situation the company is in but could also lead to car accidents.
Building a car for a consumer does not get easier over time, and our car accident attorneys believe that great care and precision needs to be exercised when auto makers are building new cars. The extra time taken by those extra workers helps keep mistakes at a minimum to prevent car accidents caused by design defects.
G.M. announced it would eliminate another 21,000 jobs and close 13 factories as well as shut down the Pontiac division. By the time the plan is finished, G.M. expects to have only about 38,000 union workers and 34 factories compared to the nearly 400,000 workers in 150 factories.
These cuts make G.M. more streamlined as a company and reduce their cost, but will the cuts increase the amount of car accidents and severe car accident injuries. With fewer workers on the assembly lines, the extra checks that those workers can make can reveal possible defective parts of the car that can result in a car accident leading to personal injury and wrongful death of the driver or other drivers.
A government automobile task force called the new plan from G.M. an “important step in G.M.’s efforts to restructure its company.” The plan also offered to give 225 shares in G.M. stock for every $1,000 in debt to the U.S. Treasury giving half the company to the government.
Our car accident lawyers understand the situation that General Motors has to improve, but we are concerned about the possibility of increased defects in automobiles that lead to car accidents. Hopefully, our concerns do not turn into horrible realities and cause the personal injury or wrongful death of drivers from a car accident.
