50-Foot Pipe Falls From Overpass Causing Car Accident

A car accident was caused by a 50-foot pipe that was being transported on a truck apparently came loose and fell off an overpass on to La Mesa Boulevard on the morning of December 11, 2009.

The pipe fell off Interstate 8 near state Route 125 and landed on a taxi cab driving on La Mesa Boulevard at about 9:15 a.m. according to the California Highway Patrol.

Our car accident attorneys know that roadway hazards and other freak occurrences can lead to car accidents.  When you’re out driving, you should be aware of what is to the left and right of  you (as well as above in this case) at all times so you can avoid anything that would cause a car crash.

Not only do you have to worry about other drivers on the road, but you should be concerned about what truckers are transporting.  Heavy equipment can fall off trucks and create obstacles on the road you’ll have to maneuver.

The pipe that fell collided with the side of a taxi cab and damaged it.  The 47-year-old driver and his 73-year-old passenger were hurt in the car accident.  Both were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.  Weather wasn’t a factor in the car accident, but witnesses say the truck was traveling too fast.

Road crews say the 50,000-pound pipe has to be dug out of the street because it is embedded in the road.

Our La Mesa car accident lawyers know accidents like these are rare, but that doesn’t mean the possibility of them happening is zero.  Anything can happen in today’s world.  You need to be careful when you’re driving on the road.  One minute, you’re driving on the freeway without a care in the world; the next minute, you’re playing dodgeball with a 50,000-pound lead pipe.  You just never know, so always be mindful.
