Prices are going up in Chula Vista! No, we don’t mean the housing market, we mean the proposed car accident charge. According to 10News, the city of Chula Vista is looking into charging drivers found to be at-fault for car accidents.
This charge could be used to cover the costs of a number of things, from vehicles catching fire to the removal of property damage out of the flow of traffic.
Other cities in California, as our firm’s Chula Vista car accident lawyers know, have already started to bill drivers found to be at fault for a crash to help pay for services provided by the local fire department and other agencies.
At fault drivers in Chula Vista might be charged for causing a car accident.
About $100,000 annually is estimated to be recovered by this plan according to the Chula Vista Fire Department, which responds to nearly 420 car accidents every year. The Fire Department claims that their allocated money is used up in resources and costs, so why not give the taxpayers a break and charge the person responsible for the crash?
The plan would be to charge at-fault drivers depending on the severity of the car accident, with most bills amounting to around $435. That price could increase if there is a fire ($605), the extraction of someone personally injured or trapped ($1,800), and if a passenger requires an airlift to a hospital for medical treatment ($2,100).
The San Diego Taxpayer Association is outraged by the proposal, calling it double taxation for residents and that this is a way for Chula Vista’s fire chief to supplement budget cuts in the department.
At the moment, it appears that most San Diego residents are opposed to charging at-fault drivers. A 10News poll found that only 17 percent of San Diegans agreed with the proposal to bill at-fault drivers for car accidents for emergency response and clean up fees.
Our San Diego car accident lawyers do not have an opinion one way or another about whether this is a good idea or not. All they will say is that anything that gives drivers an incentive to travel safer and be more cautious on the road cannot be a bad thing.
