This past Memorial Day weekend brought tragedy to the family of 17-year-old BreAnna Erickson, a Carmel Mountain Ranch teen who lost her life in a fatal car accident, according to the San Diego Union Tribune.
What was difficult for our firm’s San Diego car accident lawyers to hear was that this young woman was in the backseat of a car wearing her seat belt. Even after taking proper precautions, she was still killed in this fatal head-on car accident.

This car accident took place on Saturday, May 29, 2010 just a few minutes after 5:30 p.m. San Diego law enforcement determined that the car Erickson was riding in was speeding around a dangerous curve in the 12500 block of Sabre Springs Parkway. As the vehicle rounded the curve, it crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a box truck.
So far, police have said this is not a case of driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs or alcohol, but they are still investigating the root cause of the car accident. Many residents claim that a big problem along this stretch of road are the drivers who speed around the two-lane parkway that has numerous bends and curves.
“It can get extremely bad,” said 15-year-resident of the neighborhood, Ron Leos. “I can see how the car lost control, coming around. I didn’t know these kids, but it’s so unfortunate.”
Emergency crews arrived on the scene and had to use the Jaws of Life to open the tangled wreckage and extract three other teens who were trapped in the vehicle. All three teenagers were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment. None of the passengers in the truck were personally injured in the crash.
UPDATE: The 17-year-old teen driver might be charged with gross vehicular manslaughter for the accident and for violating the terms of her provisional license, which she had only obtained two months prior.
With summer here, your children might longer periods of time in which they are unsupervised and could possibly get into car accidents like this. As a parent, know where they are going and who is going to be in charge of driving.
