Minor Car Accidents Are More Costly In Some States

Florida lawmakers are considering a ban on certain auto accident fees, often called “crash taxes” by critics who say they are unfair and not always covered by insurance during automobile accidents.

Our car accident attorneys know how costly a car accident can be, even for motorists with insurance.  Every day our offices handle cases where drivers in automobile accidents are uninsured, with a high bill to pay in terms of property damage and personal injury.

The “crash tax” covers the cost of the police officers, firefighters, and paramedics who responded to car accidents and may cost drivers in auto accidents around $700.

“When you have an accident you’re taught to call 911 [and] it never occurred to us that there would be a charge for them,” said Amy Norville.

Norville’s son, Matthew, was in a car accident where the only property damage was a bent fender to his automobile.  A few weeks after the car accident, Matthew Norville was sent a bill for $714 to cover the cost of the county police and firefighters who responded to the auto accident.

In Escambia County, located along the Florida Panhandle, officials decide who is at fault. Then, a schedule of fees is applied, with firefighter’s time costing $10 every 15 minutes and sending a fire engine costs about $600 an hour.

Six other states—Arkansas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Tennessee and Georgia—already prohibit them, and Alabama and California may follow their lead in the next year.

Eliminating the “crash taxes” might save motorists money, but will it necessary make them better drivers?

Most Americans hate to lose money and automobile accidents can be costly, even if they are just minor fender-benders.  But the high price of insurance helps to promote safe driving so that motorists will avoid driving techniques that lead to car accidents.

As auto accident attorneys, we encourage everyone to drive safely on the road and make sure that a minor automobile accident does not turn into a costly car crash.
