Federal officials and the Toyota Motor Corporation are talking about whether or not the car maker has to fix gas pedals or floor pans in millions of recalled vehicles instead of just blaming floor mats for car accidents caused by unintended acceleration.
New evidence presented from safety tests and allegations in some car accident lawsuits has raised the concerns of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA has gotten more than 400 complaints over acceleration problems.

UPDATE: Toyota has issued a recall for defective accelerators.
Our car accident lawyers know about the recall Toyota issued in September after a car accident in the Santee section of San Diego caused the wrongful death of an off-duty police officer. We know that there are many causes of auto accidents, but this suddent and unexpected acceleration seen in Toyota models is new and problematic.
The recall to correct the design defect in the floor mats applied to almost four million Toyota cars including their Camry and Prius models. The flaw in the cars involved removing the floor mats on the driver’s side of the car, but Toyota is talking about the gas pedal and floor pans according to an NHTSA spokeswoman. Toyota and the NHTSA have been investigating cases of these accidental accelerations. Multiple tests of these systems haven’t shown any defect or malfunction, however.
In 2008, A 2005 Toyota Camry driven by Guadalupe Alberto accelerated from 25 m.p.h. to almost 80 unexpectedly and caused Alberto to crash into two trees. All this despite the fact that Alberto attempted to apply the brakes on his Toyota. Lawyers in Alberto’s case say the auto accident was caused by confusion in the sensors and electronic processors in the throttle control.
No matter how the accidents are caused, our car accident lawyers believe the problem needs to be fixed immediately. This blog alone has mentioned two fatal car accidents caused by the defect. There is no telling how many more either have been caused or will be caused by this defect.
Car makers should be responsible for the products they put on the road. Any defects in cars need to be taken care of quickly and efficiently to avoid car accidents that cause injuries and wrongful death.
