Comic Artie Lange Pleads Guilty To DUI

Comedian and radio personality Artie Lang pled guilty to a DUI after he was charged with drunk driving and reckless driving in a car accident in central New Jersey.

In his drunk-driving accident, Lange’s 2009 Nissan rear-ended another car.  While no one was personally injured, both vehicles suffer some minor property damage.  He pled guilty after authorities found that he had sleeping pills and alcohol in his system at the time of the car crash.

Our car accident lawyers know that driving under the influence causes the reflexes and instincts of drivers to diminish.  The reduction of those skills can lead to a car accident that causes significant injuries to everyone involved.

Lange’s punishments for drunk driving is a $664 fine, his driver’s license was revoked for seven months and he has to serve 12 hours in an intoxicated driver resource program.

“If we would have taken it to trial the interest of the media would have outweighed the interests of my client,” said Lange’s lawyer on his guilty plea to DUI.

During 2005, 16,885 people in the United States were killed in car accidents caused by drunk driving, representing 39 percent of all fatal car accidents, truck accidents and motorcycle accidents.  In total, 254,000 people were injured in car accidents where the police reported that alcohol was present.  Someone is killed by a drunk driver every 45 minutes.  In fact, there is a 30 percent chance that you will be involved in an alcohol-related car crash at some time in your life.

How many more innocent lives have to be lost until drivers learn that it is not safe to drink and drive?  We now have so much information about preventing drunk driving that it is always surprising when people do not learn their lesson from mistakes of the past.
