The New York Daily News reports that former Yankee Jim Leyritz has settled a fatal car accident lawsuit. Back in December of 2007, Leyritz was driving through Fort Lauderdale, Florida when he was involved in a fatal car accident that killed Fredia Ann Veitch, a mother of two children who are now ages seven and 15. Leyritz was allegedly driving drunk at the time.
Drunk driving causes thousands of car accidents every year, so anyone accused of that faces the consequences of the law — average people and celebrities alike.

Veitch’s wrongful death was a result of the drunk driving car accident, and on May 26, 2010, Leyritz settled his civil suit. His insurance awarded the family $250,000, and starting in April of 2011, he will have to pay $1,000 a month for the next 100 months — or $100,000.
Leyritz still the criminal trial phase to deal with as he was charged with manslaughter in the fatal car accident, but the closing of this part of the case helps Veitch’s family get closure.
“We’re very happy. The family just wants to have closure, so we’re glad that it’s done,” the Veitch family attorney told the New York Daily News. ”Documents show he has nothing but his major league pension. The only way to pay the family was over the course of time.”
The ’96 World Series star couldn’t be reached for comment, but his attorney was happy with the outcome and maintains that Leyritz wasn’t responsible for the fatal crash.
When athletes cause a crash while allegedly driving drunk, wonder why they don’t hire a drivers or call a cab to avoid such a mistake, factoring the kind of money they made in their playing careers. Leyritz is now retired so maybe he isn’t living the extravagant lifestyle that many current players do.
Drunk driving changes the lives of thousands of people when car accidents happen that cause wrongful deaths like these, and our car accident lawyers believe that everyone should do pay their punishment if they break the law — even World Series Champions.
