To be healthy, happy, and fighting until the day you die. Honestly, who doesn’t want to have that in their old age?
Imagine for a moment that you wake up, eat a bowl of oatmeal, walk several miles each day, and then go an swim in the ocean off the coast of Coney Island in New York City. You would be pretty fit, right? Now, just think if you did all that and you were 104-years-0ld. That was the life of strongman Joe Rollino.
Rollino died in a pedestrian accident last week when a van struck him as he was crossing the street. This sad story just goes to show that personal injury accidents do not discriminate against the healthy and fit — they can happen to anyone at any time.
The Bay Ridge is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY and filled with local characters like Rollino, who was called “Kid Dundee” in his fighting days. From all accounts of his neighbors and friends, Rollino was a legend at the time of his wrongful death. Our pedestrian accident lawyers know that the older you get, the harder it is to survive a car accident, slip and falls, and any personal injury that involves high-speed impacts.

The pedestrian accident occurred when Rollino was crossing the Bay Ridge Parkway to pick-up his newspaper like he did everyday. Unfortunately, on this morning, a van did not have time to slow down and hit Rollino. The New York Police Department (NYPD) has not charged the driver of a car with a crime, citing that she was not driving recklessly or driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs.
EMTs rushed Rollino to the Lutheran Medical Center for medical treatment, but he ended up passing away around 7 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.
“If he told me he was 75, I would have said he looked great for his age,” said a former NYPD detective and friend of Rollino.
He was in great physical condition, could have last many more years, but a catastrophic injury unfortunately took his life. Our pedestrian accidents want to encourage everyone to not only be as healthy as Rollino, but to also make sure you are careful when crossing the street, even if it is part of your daily routine that keeps you going past the age of 100.
What are your feelings on this story – do you think that Rollino could have last longer if it weren’t for this tragic pedestrian accident, and should the woman who was driving the van that hit him be charged with any crime?
