SDPD To Put Drunk Drivers On The Naughty List

Several weeks ago, the San Diego Police Department conducted a sweep of 750 outstanding DUI warrents in an effort to get drunk-drivers to pay the price for their violation of the law.  But starting today until January 3, 2010, the SDPD will be on the lookout for new violators.

Numerous checkpoints and sobriety tests have been set up region-wide to stop drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol (DUI) during the holiday season and all the way through the New Year.

Our firm’s San Diego auto accident attorneys know that when the holidays are in effect, the number of reckless driving incidents due to intoxicated motorists goes through the roof.  Many times these drivers cause accidents because combined with snowy road conditions, it is the perfect recipe for a serious car accident.

“DUI checkpoints are time-tested and proven as the most effective DUI countermeasure, and I’m gratified that we’re seeing the life-saving results,” Christopher Murphy, director of the Office of Traffic Safety said.

This aggressive tactic will be a threefold endevour, with curfew checks, additional patrol units, and a “zero tolerance” policy against drivers on cellphones or ones who speed at extremely high rates.  If you are drunk, underage, and going too fast, the SDPD has made it their mission to stop you.

“The recent deaths involving teens drinking and driving were entirely preventable,” Sheriff Bill Gore said, who is helping to head holiday watch and make sure that everyone in San Diego gets home safe, sound and sober.
