Wisconsin Unlikely To Increase DUI Drunk-Driving Penalties

Lawmakers in Wisconsin want to make laws regarding drunken-driving stiffer in a state that is one of the most lenient on people driving under the influence.

Wisconsin is the only state that penalizes a first-time drunken-driving offense with a traffic citation, rather than a criminal charge.  Wisconsin is also among one of the states that prohibit sobriety checkpoints by police.

Drunk driving in the U.S. has caused hundreds of wrongful death car accidents every year.

Our car accident attorneys in San Diego believe drivers irresponsible enough to get behind the wheel of a car under the influence of drugs or alcohol should prepare for the worst of consequences.

Drinking and driving leads to thousands of car accidents every year that lead to personal injury like whiplash.

In a state known for its beer and breweries, Wisconsin legislators should be aware of a problem that is very obvious in their state and look for ways to correct it before more personal injuries or wrongful deaths happen.

One politician, Tony Staskunas, has proposed a law that would require first offenders with a blood-alcohol level of at least 0.15% to install “ignition interlocks” on their cars.  The interlock would require first offenders to submit a breathalizer before their car is turned on.

The law would also increase penalties for repeat offenders and expand an alcohol-treatment program that would be an alternative to jail time.

In 2007, 313 wrongful deaths were linked to DUI car accidents where the driver had a BAC of at least 0.08% (a 2% increase from 2006).  About 41% of the state’s traffic deaths involved DUI drunk driving.

With statistics as obvious as those, should Wisconsin’s state lawmakers not want increased penalties and fines for people who do not realize how dangerous drinking and driving is?  How many more people have to die in Wisconsin before changes are made?

The San Diego car accident attorneys at our firm urge Wisconsin lawmakers to implement stricter penalties for drivers who do not understand that drinking and driving is a bad idea.  Personal injury and wrongful death happens as a result of this combination every year, and it is time to put a stop to this.
