Wright Medical Technology Inc., a Tennessee-based medical products company, has agreed to settle 29 lawsuits related to treatment provided by a former West Virginia surgeon who has been named in 124 medical malpractice lawsuits.

The settlements stem from a bone fusion material, called Allomatrix, which was used by Dr. John A. King in 33 surgeries that resulted in lawsuits, while he was on staff at Putnam General Hospital in Charleston. Shortly before Dr. King used it, Allomatrix had failed to work properly during two experimental studies performed on rats and rabbits.
While at Putnam General, Dr. King implanted spinal devices made by Wright Medical and EBI Inc. for purposes that had not been approved by the Federal Drug Administration. The lawsuits against Dr. King, which named Wright Medical and EBI as defendants, also stated Dr. King received financial kickbacks from both companies for using their devices.
Some of the lawsuits filed against Dr. King also alleged he used devices made by Wright Medical and EBI in experiments performed on patients without their consent and that he made sure each sex was equally represented among patients on whom he tested the medical treatment.
