PA Woman Gets $1.88 Million In Medical Malpractice Case

A jury awarded a Pennsylvania woman $1.88 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit filed on behalf of her husband, who suffered a wrongful death when he died of cancer in 2008.

Christine Golden filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against former Scranton urologist Milan J. Smolko, pathologist Dr. Lillian Longendorfer and Dr. Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale after they allegedly failed to diagnose her husband’s bladder cancer despite several consultations and examinations.

Our firm’s experienced personal injury lawyers in San Diego  know that medical malpractice mistakes are a hot issue right now.  But when you get past the politics of the issue, you remember that real people are left to deal with the problems associated with medical malpractice (like medical bills).

Mrs. Golden’s lawyer said Terrence E. Golden saw Dr. Smolko several times in 16 months complaining of urinary problems.  Dr. Smolko said he had an inflamed and enlarged prostate, but did not investigate further until July 2003.  A bladder biopsy was later sent to Dr. Longendorfer, who worked at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Longendorfer also failed to diagnose Mr. Golden’s bladder cancer.  Another doctor diagnosed Mr. Golden’s cancer in June 2004.  By then, the cancer had spread and Mr. Golden underwent surgery to remove his prostate, bladder and portions of his urethra.  The cancer caused his wrongful death in 2008.

Doctors are paid to ensure the health of people who go to them.  With all of the tests and resources they have available, it’s hard to believe that cancer can be misdiagnosed.
