Toyota Floor Mat Recall After Santee Auto Accident

Car companies sometimes catch their mistakes too late, when their consumers have already experienced something wrong with their product and by that point in time lives are often lost.

On November 2nd, 2009, Toyota sent notices to the owners of specific Toyota and Lexus models informing them about the potentially unsecured and dangerous floor mat on the driver’s side which can get in the way of the accelerator.  In some cases, this problem leads to the gas pedal becoming stuck and drivers losing control of the vehicle.

UPDATE: Toyota has issued a recall for defective accelerators.

Our auto accident attorneys know that car companies should correct their products liabilitymistakes as fast as they can to avoid any future auto accidents that involve personal injury or lead to the wrongful deaths of motorists.

The auto giant, complying with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, sent letters of future recalls after the Santee car crash that took the life an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and three members of his family.

Toyota made a statement that no design defects are present in vehicles where the driver’s floor mat is properly secured and compatible with that specific model of car.  The following cars were named in the letter for the voluntary safety recall:

  • 2007-2010 Camry
  • 2005-2010 Avalon
  • 2004-2009 Prius
  • 2005-2010 Tacoma
  • 2007-2010 Tundra
  • 2007-2010 ES350
  • 2006-2010 IS250 and IS350

If you drive any one of these models, make sure that your floor mats are properly secured on the driver’s side and does not interfere with the accelerator’s pedal in any way.  If you have more questions or need more information, contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center (1 -800-331-4331) or the Lexus Customer Assistance Center (1-800-255-3987).
