Family Files Wrongful Death Claim Over Anesthesia Error

The family of a Florida high school senior filed a wrongful death lawsuit against doctors who didn’t treat their daughter who suffered complications after breast augmentation surgery.

Stephanie Kuleba died as a result of a severe reaction to anesthesia called malignant hyperthermia.  Malignant hyperthermia causes the body to regulate the amount of oxygen it can take in, remove carbon dioxide and regulate body temperature leading to circulatory failure.

The family of Stephanie Kuleba wants to bring awareness of dangerous reactions to anesthesia like the one that caused their daughters wrongful death.

Our wrongful death lawyers want to warn you that there is a slight risk in using anesthesia during a medical procedure.  Anesthesia is used in many surgeries to induce unconsciousness or numb pain so that you can’t feel your surgery.  Unfortunately, three to five people per million die because of anesthesia, so the dangers are present but albeit minimal.  Malignant hyperthermia is possible, but other conditions like sepsis (whole-body infection) or organ failure can cause wrongful death.

Thomas Kuleba, Stephanie’s father, said many people don’t know the risks of getting anesthesia.  Some people don’t even meet with their anesthesiologists until right before the surgery.

“Know and research your anesthesiologist as much as you would your surgeon,” he urges.  This way you can ensure that you are actually getting the best medical treatment possible.

The Kulebas’ lawsuit seeks an amount of damages not disclosed at this point from Dr. Steven Schuster and other doctors, which includes Dr. Peter Warheit, the anesthesiologist.

Thomas Kuleba makes a very good point.  Often, anesthesiologists are just as important as the surgeons.  Our wrongful death attorneys believe if you have to have surgery or need any type of continuous medical care, always research your doctors.  Make sure you are confident in who you choose to take care of your body.

Since you can’t do the work yourself, you have to do what work you can to make sure the people that are doing the work will do their job effectively as well as safely.
