Fiery Car Accident Kills 3 South of Bakersfield

On Friday, January 9, 2009, a head-on collision between two pickup trucks south of Bakersfield killed three people, including one woman who was pulled from the flaming wreck by a California Highway Patrol officer.

According to the CHP officer, the auto accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. when a Chevy pickup truck shot through the local intersection of Houghton Rd. and Wible Road at approximately 65 mph.

Our truck accident lawyers know from experience that accidents which involve fire can lead to burn injuries, if not death to those caught in the fiery wreckage.  For those who do survive, they are usually never able to fully physically recover and may suffer from emotional trauma the remainder of their lives.

Due to speeding and other unknown reasons, the Chevy pickup truck ended up airborne and flew into the oncoming lane, smashing into a Nissan pickup truck coming the opposite way.  That is when the car accident fire was started (from the Chevy pickup truck).

Had the driver of the Chevy pickup truck not been speeding, however, this fatal car accident could have been entirely avoided because the driver would have had enough time to react and not fly into the incoming lane.  As car accident lawyers, we often handle cases where speeding caused ghastly car accidents, and in nearly all cases, the accident may have been prevented by just a reasonable driving speed.

The drivers of both pickup trucks were killed immediately.  CHP officer Joshua Hatfield spotted a female passenger on fire in the Chevy when he arrived on the scene and pulled her out of the truck, but she died as well and may have already been dead when Hatfield arrived at the scene.

The woman was reportedly pregnant.  Officer Joshua Hatfield suffered injuries while attempting to pull the woman from the burning car wreck.  The police report claims 3 lives were killed, but really, 4 lives had been taken.  So in total, one driver’s speeding cost 4 lives and injuries to an officer that required medical treatment.
