Homeless Bicyclist Dies After Collision With Automobile

Though we often forget about the homeless citizens of our cities, we must take into account that they are people and can experience the same kind of pain and suffering as any one of us not living on the street.

Jeffrey Scott Brown lost his life when he was biking along Rosecrans and collided with a vehicle in a fatal bicycle accident, as reported on the 10 News website.  Brown was 40-years-old at the time of the accident and currently a transient living in San Diego.

Our firm’s bicycle accident attorneys know that when you are not wearing the proper safety gear while biking — such as a helmet — it can lead to bodily harm, including traumatic brain injury.  And that’s just for a simple fall off your bike.  Say you get hit by a car, as Brown was, and are not properly prepared for the impact then you might experience a wrongful death — as was the outcome in this case.

The accident occurred when Brown swerved into traffic on Rosecrans’ east bound lanes near North Harbor Drive and was struck by a 60-year-old motorist behind the seat of a Range Rover.  Authorities arrived to give Brown medical treatment, they instead pronounced him dead at the scene around 12:45 a.m.

Since Brown was homeless, he might not have been able to afford a helmet or maintanence for his bicycle, both of which are important if you are looking to avoid a bicycle accident.  If you travel around on a bike, here’s a few tips for remaining safe on your journey:

  • Go with the traffic, not against it.  That’s not only defensive driving, but the law as well.
  • Know the proper hand signals to indicate to drivers on the road which direction you are headed in.
  • Do not swerve in-and-out of traffic, even if you think you have enough room.
  • Of course, always wear your helmet.

The bicycle accident attorneys who work at our law offices know that not everyone can afford the same luxuries, even when it comes to getting around town on a bike.  It is a shame that this man lost his life, but we encourage you to protect yourself and your family whenever you are biking on the road.
