In the tragic event of the Bellaire nursing home residents, the families of those who suffered a wrongful death argued that Motor Coach Industries, the bus manufacturer, and component makers were aware of a design defect in the hub and axle system that could fail, resulting in property damage, but more importantly, personal injuries. 
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration later determined the cause of the bus accident was insufficient lubrication of a rear axle, which overheated and caused a fire in the wheel that quickly filled the bus with flames and heavy smoke.
“It’s just helping us have closure,” said Susan Elledge, whose mother, Rebecca Elledge, and aunt, Maxcy Hathorn, both died aboard the bus. “I hope the companies involved will change the way they do things. Do a little more towards safety on the buses.”
