A new report released by Consumer Reports in Detroit on October 27, 2009 revealed that Ford Motor Company (and other American car makers) are showing promise in automobile reliability.

Even though American auto makers are taking strides to produce more reliable cars, Japanese cars dominate the list of cars least likely to break down or cause car accidents.

Our car accident lawyers in San Diego know that Japanese auto makers have dominated the market when it comes to making the most reliable cars in the world.  Americans have been playing catchup for a long time, and it seems their work is being noticed.

This is an important step in consumer faith in domestic automobiles.  Consumers may be more willing to buy American cars if American cars are not more prone to products liability accidents that can cause injuries like whiplash or spinal cord injuries.

Consumer Reports surveyed 51 different Lincoln, Mercury and Ford cars and trucks.  Ratings were average or better in 90 percent of them.  The Ford Fusion (the #10 best selling car in America) outscored the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord — both of which are higher than the Fusion in terms of how many are sold.

There were mixed results at General Motors.  GM models scored average reliability scores in 20 of 48 models.  The Chevrolet Malibu V6 had scores of better-than-average.  Unfortunately for Chrysler, one-third of their cars and trucks are still worse than average.

Despite the better American performance in the report, Asian cars continue to dominate those reports.  Eight of the top ten cars in the ranking are Asian (Scion, Honda, Toyota, Infiniti, Acura, Mitsubishi, Lexus and Hyundai).

Our San Diego firm’s car accident lawyers want domestic automakers like Ford and GM to succeed, but domestic cars need to be just as reliable as their foreign counterparts if their companies are to succeed.
