In an effort to improve on traffic management technology on Interstate 15, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced an $8.7 million grant to the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) for the I-15.  The grant, funded through the DOT’s Integrated Corridor Management Initiative, will be used to install new transportation systems including simulation tools, traffic prediction, traveler information and road sensors.

Our car accident lawyers hope that these new measures could reduce traffic congestion and lead to fewer car accidents.

According to the California Department of Transportation, I-15 serves up to 300,000 people every day.  Any highway with drivers in that high of volume should be as safe and as technologically advanced as possible to prevent car accidents.  When it comes to the daily commute, you should always be careful if you’re on I-15 or any other highway with a lot of congestion — especially during rush hour.  There is so much stop and go traffic on a busy morning that rear-end car accidents are likely because of the one moment you (or another driver) isn’t paying attention.

SANDAG’s executive director says the I-15 is already one of the smartest freeways in the world, and getting smarter will only help commuters.  SANDAG’s senior public information officer elaborated on that point with projects that have already been installed on the I-15.

The I-15 already has a reversible lane system.  Imagine rush hour traffic on the I-15.  In the middle of the highway, there are four extra lanes.  The direction of those lanes can be changed according to the flow of traffic.  For instance, if there is more traffic going one way compared to the other, those reversible lanes open up more flow to commuters going that way.

The grant, that Hicks says SANDAG applied for, was given to a partnership that also includes the Metropolitan Transit System, the California Department of Transportation and the North County Transit District as well as the cities of San Diego, Poway and Escondido.  The latest grant will go to improve on that idea with a better wire management system as well as a more streamlined “fast track” system.  The fast track is similar to the car pool lane, but you have to pay to access it; and if you want to pay to use that service on the I-15 between CA-163 and CA-56, the electronic system stands to get better.

With this grant, SANDAG has new resources to help California drivers commute safely on freeways like I-15.  Our car accident lawyers hope that the new devices added to the 15 will prevent even more car accidents for the hundreds of thousands of drivers that commute every day.
