Young people in San Diego who don’t want to see their friends in car accidents with drunk drivers or other alcohol related incidents are doing something to keep it from happening by trying to catch adults who buy alcohol for minors.

“You got to hand it to kids like this that take a stand and say, ‘No, I’ll wait until I’m 21,” said an SD Sheriff’s Sergeant.

Our car accident lawyers also applaud the teenagers for taking matters into their own hands because of so many underage teenage car accidents that happened last year … some of which were caused by drunk driving.

A recent survey done in San Diego revealed that 24% of San Diego County 9th graders drank alcohol in the last month.  The same survey found that 37% of 11th graders did, too.  These numbers are somewhat startling because it just means that every day, a car accident can be drunk behind the wheel of a car causing a car accident that can lead to serious personal injury.

The teenagers undercover have the support of law enforcement, and these teenagers have been trained to know when to get out of an operation.  If something doesn’t sound or feel right, the teenagers are instructed to walk away.  The teenagers are also watched carefully by investigators at the Sheriff’s office who are also undercover.

During the last operation in Imperial Beach, only two people were cited with furnishing alcohol to a minor, which is a misdemeanor.  The citation comes with a $1,000 fine attached to it.  Plenty of adults rejected the requests from the teenagers, which is reassuring.

Our car accident attorneys in San Diego want to remind everyone that there is a reason why there is a minimum age for alcohol purchases.  Sometimes, teenagers can be irresponsible because of the thoughts of their own invincibility.  We all need to do our part to ensure the health of teenagers everywhere.
