Sometimes getting to work with two wheels can be just as enjoyable as getting there on four.

That’s the idea being utilized by the city of San Francisco as they conduct their annual ‘Bike to Work Day’ event that aims to lower the amount of car accident for one day. The event creates awareness that there are cleaner and more healthy ways to get to where you want to go, be it for work, school or pleasure.

Our car accident lawyers love to see cities who participate in ‘Bike to Work Days’.  For at least one day, the amount of traffic accidents can be reduced.  Because of heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic in cities like San Francisco, rear-end car accidents happen every day and lead to a range of personal injuries.

‘Bike to Work Day’ to lower the amount of car accidents for one day.

As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, early participants of San Francisco’s ‘Bike to Work Day’ included Mayor Gavin Newsom who was seen biking down Market Street on his way to City Hall with Renee Rivera, the executive director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

Bicyclists can pause at one of 27 energizing stations spread throughout the city.  At these stations, cyclists can get refreshments, gift bags as well as some kudos for their participation.  A spokesman for major sponsor Kaiser Permanente said the ‘Bike to Work Day’ is off to a good start, with no reports of bicycle accidents occurring so far.

“It’s early, but we’ve had a few bikers pass through already,” the spokesman told the San Francisco Chronicle at about 5:30 a.m. while speaking at an energizer station on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

According to the Marin County Bicycle Coalition, about 4,000 people in Marin County participated in ‘Bike to Work Day’.  The spokesperson did mention that the temperatures were a bit more brisk than in past years, but doubt that it will significantly affect the 2010 numbers.

If you want to learn more about the City by the Bay’s ‘Bike to Work Day’ or you’re reading this in San Francisco and want to find out where all the energizing stations are, you can find it at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

Our car accident lawyers in San Diego can’t deny the obvious environmental effect this has on the city of San Francisco, but the reduced traffic aspect of the event is something we’re happy with as well.

If you are bicycling through the Castro or any other district, be safe.  Wear your helmet.  Obey standard traffic laws.  Participating in this event is great, but always be vigilant when it comes to the ever-present hazards on the road.
