As auto accident attorneys, we have been cautioning about the dangers of distracted driving as the number of car accidents caused by distracted driving has increased steadily over the last few years.

One attorney in Seattle has taken warning people against distracted driving to new heights, according to The Issaquah Press.

Founder of Teens Against Distracted Driving Project shares creation story.

One man, an attorney in Seattle, started the project earlier this year after hearing about a car accident in California.  A driver who was allegedly drunk driving rear-ended another car and caused the wrongful death of a 4-year-old boy in the back. The attorney felt a connection to the auto accident.

In the past, officers could write you a ticket for distracted driving only if you were pulled over for another reason.  Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire just signed a new law making texting while driving a primary offense.  Beginning June 1, 2010, you can be penalized with a $124 fine if you are caught texting while driving a car.

This creates a new deterrence for distracted drivers, namely those under the age of 24, one-third of which have admitted to texting behind the wheel.  A text message is not worth their life, and the Teens Against Distracted Driving project serves as a way to get the word out.  On the Web site, you can sign the pledge to not text while driving as well as find out how you can get involved by wearing bracelets and bringing the campaign to schools across America.

“My son was four at the time, so it got kind of personal,” the attorney/founder told The Issaquah Press.  “It made me think of what I could do to make a difference.”

In the split second or more that it takes to send a text message you can cause serious personal injuries or wrongful death.  Remember, you can always send that text message AFTER you reach your destination.
