Millions of toxic Shrek glasses have been sold at McDonald’s, and the fast-food company is recalling over 12 million of the collector’s glassware.

McDonald’s got the glassware from a company with a consistent 15 year track record of baking designs into glasses.  That is why concerns have been raised about the potential for other toxic cadmium glasses in a report by 10 News in San Diego, and it’s caught the attention of our personal injury lawyer blog as well.

Over 12 million Shrek collector’s glasses voluntarily recalled.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned consumers to immediately stop using the collector’s glasses sold at McDonald’s as part of its “Shrek Forver After” promotional campaign.  McDonald’s then voluntarily issued the recall citing “an abundance of caution” and the “CPSC’s evolving assessment of standards for consumer products.”

“We believe the Shrek glassware is safe for consumer use,” McDonald’s USA spokesperson said.  “However, again to ensure that our customers receive safe products from us, we made the decision to stop selling them and voluntarily recall these products effective immediately.”

According to McDonald’s, the glasses met federal guidelines for toxic cadmium, which were tested by the CPSC.  The agency countered that the glasses fell short of newer standards for toxicity currently being developed.

Worsening the issue, a spokesman for Arc International — the company that made the toxic glasses — indicated that this product liability issue could have happened to any manufacturer.  Many companies use the same procedures Arc — a French company with a Millville, New Jersey plant — follows when putting cartoons on glassware.

“It could have been any glass company,” said an executive with Arc International.  “We all do the same thing using materials from the same suppliers.”
