Swedish furniture retailer IKEA recalled millions of Roman and roll-up window blinds after strangulation occurred in one child and could have in two other cases according to details from Bloomberg.

This comes six months after a larger recall was issued by Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney and Ace Hardware Corp. that resulted in 50 million blinds being recalled for the same reasons.  Strangulation is a children’s injury that kills and hurts youths every year, and products like window blinds and certain bed sheets are the prime causes.

IKEA has issued a product liability recall involving window blinds.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada said IKEA issued a products liability recall of 3.36 million window blinds after the wrongful death of one child occurred and the possible strangulation of two others were reported.

The CPSC said they received reports about a 1-year-old girl in Greenwich, Connecticut was strangled by the inner cord of an IKEA Roman blind.  Another 2-year-old boy was almost strangled, and those concerns prompted the Swedish manufacturer to fix the design defect.

In a statement, IKEA said the recall refers to certain Roman and roll-up blinds.  Consumers should stop using all blinds made by IKEA from January 1998 through June 2009 for anywhere between $5 and $55.  Five children have already died this year, and a total of thirty-five others have suffered wrongful deaths in the past two years due to strangulations.

Linda Kaiser, the founder of Parents for Window Blind Safety, argues that manufacturers should offer cordless blinds to ensure the safety of young children who might think the cords are toys.  Kaiser has a vested interest in that creation because 1-year-old daughter, Cheyenne, was strangled by a window blind cord in 2002.

Consumers are advised to call the CPSC, call IKEA toll- free at 1-88-966-4532 or go to IKEA’s website for more details.
