The exhilaration of riding a motorcycle is unlike anything else. The wind in your hair, the feeling of freedom and the cool wind racing across your skin… it’s an experience. The truth is, though, that riding a motorcycle is certainly fun but it is also extremely dangerous. In fact, motorcyclists have significantly increased risk when it comes to bodily injury and death compared to car drivers. It’s an inherently dangerous activity and when coupled with traffic or other roadway conditions, the increase for injury is even higher.

When it comes to riding a motorcycle, it goes without saying how much focus and preciseness a motorcyclist must have to ride unscathed. The truth is that there are many reasons a motorcycle accident may occur ranging from speeding to drinking. Check our top causes of motorcycle feature article to learn more about why a motorcycle might occur. In all cases, we urge all San Diego riders to approach the roadways with caution. Your life depends on it.

MISSION VALLEY MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT

Recently, Fox 5 San Diego (2/27/2015) reported on a San Diego motorcycle accident that led to a serious catastrophic injury. According to reports, a man was left in critical condition after his leg was amputated in the Mission Valley accident.

The motorcycle accident was said to have occurred when another driver collided into the rider as a result of not having seen the motorcyclist. The rider accelerated at the last minute to avoid the accident, causing him to lose control over his bike and careen into a curb. Police said the man was launched over the on-ramp due to the impact of the crash.

The rider sustained serious injury including an amputated leg, the California Highway Patrol reported.

FOR A SAFER RIDE…

If you’re a San Diego motorcyclist, you can’t miss these important tips for a safer ride.

LOOK AHEAD

Quite possibly the most important aspect of riding, you must always look ahead, scanning the road and preparing for any sudden changes or emergency situations. Ride toward where you look and continue scanning far ahead to prepare you for any sudden changes.

BE WEATHER WISE

A motorcycle is no match against rain. With slippery roadways and a significantly higher risk of losing control, rain is treacherous when it comes to your safety. Try to hold out on riding in drizzle or wet weather; stop and keep your bike dry while the rain passes. Proceed when it is dry. If that is not possible, wait until the rain subsides completely and then approach the roadways with extreme caution. It is always best to wait until the roads are dry to ride your motorcycle.

WORK ON CORNERING

Any rider knows that cornering is a big part – if not the biggest – aspect of riding a motorcycle. You’ll spend your whole life mastering cornering and the best possible way of perfecting this skill is to continue practicing in safe, controlled conditions. Consider taking a defensive riding course where you can fine tune these skills and practice your abilities safely when riding on open roadways. Never push the limit; always be cautious when approaching corners and use your rider sense when it comes to riding with caution.

OVERCOMING FEAR

Anyone would be fearful in an emergency situation. With adrenaline running high and a tendency toward impulsivity, results could lead to disaster in the event of an emergency. The truth is that an emergency situation is difficult to practice reacting to; after all, you never know what an emergency situation may bring. However, you can practice envisioning stressful situations and rehearsing your reactions. For instance, if you notice sudden braking ahead, what do you do? Or, if you sense the other driver can’t see you and traffic is closing in, what would your reaction be? Practice these scenarios in your head and read up on best practices, too, to find out how you can be a proactive rider.
