When you get into a car accident, is the collision itself the worst part about it?  Not necessarily.  The car crash is only the tip of the iceberg if the car catches fire.

From 2002 to 2005, fire departments in America responded on average to more than 300,000 vehicle fires. The results of these fires after car accidents: over 500 wrongful deaths, 1,600 injuries and about $1.3 billion in property damage.

Our firm’s experienced car accident attorneys have, in the past, seen how crash fires have the potential to cause more damage than the initial car accident.  The flammable content (i.e. gasoline and oil) of the automobile can cause burn injuries and lead to explosions that can lead to wrongful death and thousands of dollars in repairs to your car.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) composed standards to combat against the epidemic … but they were composed in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 301 specified maximum fuel spillage in different types of crashes, but the barrier testing today does not replicate collisions.  This standard also does not test or use new technology such as fuel bladders, plastic liners around the fuel tanks.

The other standard, FMVSS 302, outlines the specs for burn rate and burn duration of certain compartments using a Bunsen burner.  This standard’s relevance is questionable because of the higher amount of combustible materials in today’s cars compared to their 1972 predecessors, which is when FMVSS 302 was designed.

Our car accident attorneys feel that they must inform consumers and clients about all of the dangers of car accidents as well as stress the need to protect yourself out on the road by purchasing the best car insurance policy available.  Burn injuries can potentially happen in the invent of a car accident, but with the right insurance, they can help you recover from any damage done to your body.
