“You can’t handle the truth!”

Jack Nicholson proclaimed that famous phrase the 1992 film “A Few Good Men.”  Over 15 years later, California legislators — in addition to car accident attorneys — demand the truth when it comes to tires riding that have the potential to cause car accidents.

In a previous auto accident blog about tire blowouts, we informed our readers about the growing problem of older tires being represented and sold to consumers as “brand new.”  Design defects in tires cause many car accidents every year, but car accidents due to tire blowouts are not far behind.

Did you know when you purchase new tires for your car, check the last four numbers of the tire’s sidewall.  After the initials “DOT,” the first two numbers represent the week the tires were made, and the last two show the year.

“Tires that appear to be new are catastrophically failing and many times the tires are put on the vehicles by the dealers themselves,” said a safety advocate from Safety Research and Strategies.  He communicated this to officials in Sacramento on April 15, 2009.

The advocate leads the charge for more public disclosure about tires that cause car accidents leading to a great amount of serious injury and wrongful death.  The Truth in Tires bill (AB 496) is scheduled for a hearing on April 21, 2009.

As car accident lawyers, we see cases where faulty tires result in car accidents causing serious injury and wrongful death car accidents.  We see this bill as a step in the right direction in ensuring driver safety.  Aging tires are on our roads, and unfortunately, that is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
