With the economy in the state it is in, organizations and businesses are doing whatever they can to generate revenue.  Court systems in the United States are becoming more aggressive in getting fees and fines from cases like auto DUI.

Our firm’s San Diego car accident attorneys believe that people who could possible cause car accidents with a DUI should be punished to the full extent of the law.  Fines that are assigned for cases such as automobile accidents coupled with drunk driving should be paid.  It may sound cliché, but if you do the crime, you have to (in this case) pay the fine.

In Florida, courts are sending letters from their Collections Courts threatening jail time for people who are behind on their court fees and legal fines.  With the economic crisis nationwide, court clerks are pressured more and more to bring in every dollar.

This can only be seen as a great thing.  Not only does it make drunk drivers responsible for the DUI crime they commit by their fine payment, but it also serves as a way to keep these same people from committing repeat DUI offenses.

Anything that makes roads a little bit safer and cause fewer car crashes can only be seen as a positive.

Some of the most serious fines and fees come from DUI car accident cases.  In California, a first offense DUI laws can have fines ranging from $1400-$1800.  That amount rises with every offense after the first.  Looking at that makes you wonder which more sense: $20-$50 for a cab or $1400-$1800 to drunk-drive yourself home?

Other states have been looking at Florida’s success and have also cracked down on people who owe fines.  Georgia and Michigan institute similar plans to recoup fines and fees.  With 44 states facing budget deficits totaling $90 billion this year, 25 state court systems already have budget shortages.

Those that argue against the plan do not want other states to follow Florida’s example.  They believe the state system is wasting resources “to get blood from a stone.”

Our car accident lawyers in San Diego want to prevent as many car accidents caused by drunk driving as possible.  Organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Alcoholics Anonymous do their parts to warn drivers about drunk driving, and our car accident attorneys have a helpful DUI prevention resource page that has information about stopping the problem before it’s ever a thought.
