Each year, there are hundreds of thousands of car accidents, but car accidents caused by drunk drivers (DUI) often cause the most tragedy as they could have been avoided if a drunk driver had only opted to take a cab instead of driving.

The latest national survey by federal safety officials of alcohol and drug use on the nation’s roadways found that 16% of drivers, tested on weekend nights, turned up positive for drugs — including marijuana, cocaine and prescription sedatives.

Our firm’s San Diego car accident attorneys know that illegal drugs and alcohol act on the brain and alter perception, cognition, attention, balance, coordination, reaction time and various other qualities required for safe driving.

As a result, drunk drivers (DUI) are more likely to cause a car accident than any other driver on the road.  Many of these car accidents result in the personal injuries or even the wrongful death of innocent bystanders.

Our car accident attorneys in San Diego want to prevent as many car accidents caused by drunk drivers.  In an effort to inform people about the prevention of drunk driving, our car accident lawyers have a resource page to help with prevention of drunk driving.

The survey of alcohol and drug use on the nation’s roadways found that the percentage of male drivers with illegal blood-alcohol levels was 42% higher than the percentage of alcohol-impaired female drivers.

Drivers were more likely to be driving drunk during late nighttime hours (1 a.m. to 3 a.m.) than during daytime or early evening hours.

Motorcycle riders were more than twice as likely as passenger vehicle drivers to be drunk (5.6% compared with 2.3%).  Pickup truck drivers were the next most likely to have illegal blood-alcohol levels (3.3%).

Our personal injury firm believes that there is absolutely no reason that anyone should drive a car after drinking (DUI) or taking illegal drugs and there are many ways to avoid the tragic car accidents that kill many innocent people.

Why not take a cab or call a friend before driving a car after drinking?  Just remember, one drink is too many if you plan on driving, so always have a sober person take care of the driving.
