More and more in this day and age individuals decide that the need to stay connected to others through constant communication has outweighed the risks of being distracted, especially when driving.

Many car accidents are caused by drivers who are talking or texting on their cell phones.

As car accident attorneys, we know that drivers who engage more frequently in distracted driving are more likely to be involved in a car accident or near-crash.

Extensive research has shown the catastrophic risks of distracted driving by concluding that drivers who use their cellphones are four times more likely to cause a car accident that results in severe personal injuries than those who opt to not use their phone.

This new finding is alarming in itself; but if you relate these statistics to drunken-driving car accident statistics, the findings are overwhelming.  The likelihood that distracted drivers will cause a car crash is equal to that of someone with a .08 percent blood alcohol level.  While drunken-driving is illegal in all 50 states, cell phone usage in cars (i.e. texting and talking) while driving, is not banned in every state.

Five states have opted to pass laws that require drivers who talk on cellphones to use hands-free devices, but research shows that using headsets can be as dangerous as holding a phone because the conversation distracts drivers from focusing on the road.

A 2003 Harvard study estimated that cellphone distractions caused 2,600 wrongful deaths every year, and 330,000 car accidents that result in moderate or severe personal injuries, some of them requiring major medical treatments.

So how do we combat this problem of distracted driving?

As car accident lawyers, we believe that it is best to make and finish your cell phone calls before you start your car and drive.  If your phone rings while you are driving, let your voicemail pick up the call.  If you must answer your phone, it is safer to pull over to a safe location and park before using your cell phone.

Is it not worth the effort to make a few changes and save the thousands of lives that are killed in fatal car accidents due to driver distractions?
