Two popular over-the-counter dietary supplements, used primarily by high school students, contain illegal steroids according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

American Cellular Labs products Tren Xtreme and Mass Xtreme are marketed to high school athletes as a “potent legal alternative” to steroids.  They are apparently too potent and not alternative enough because on July 23, 2009, the FDA determined that the dietary supplements contain illegal steroids and have dangerous side effects.

Our San Diego personal injury attorneys are always concerned about product liability and safety, especially those that are marketed to teenagers.  Teenagers who participate in organized sports are sometimes prone to use nutritional products that can have serious side effects and can lead to wrongful death as young athletes feel the pressure from family members coaches and even other teenagers to perform well.

Between the allure of a professional contract or collegiate scholarship, teen sports are not just the fun and games of yesteryear.

The use of steroids can be harmful to athletes of all ages.  A common side effect of steroid abuse is high blood pressure, which often leads to heart problems.  If steroid abuse continues, heart attacks and heart failure become more and more likely, as well as wrongful death.

One man, head of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, said Tren Xtreme and Mass Extreme help athletes gain strength and muscle mass fast — very similar to steroids.

“This is the supplement of choice for high school football players, and we have heard that from more than one source,” he said.

The FDA — which regulates these supplements — has spoken loud and clear.  Hopefully, it is not too late for some of these teen athletes, who may have unknowingly become addicted to steroids.

Tren Xtreme and Mass Xtreme were exclusively sold at Max Muscle, a walk-in supplement store with about 100 locations nation-wide.  The personal injury lawyers who work at our San Diego firm hope that you or your child stays aware from this dangerous nutritional supplement.

Is the risk of injury or wrongful death worth taking illegal supplements to gain an edge on your competition?
