“Cash for Clunkers” is a way to stimulate the economy and car industry by allowing people to trade in their old cars for a new one.

By getting older cars off the roads and buying discounted new cars — which comply with higher car safety standards and also employ technology that helps you in case of a car accident — this will limit the amount of injuries one will endure in case of a car accident. In order to qualify, your car must be older than 10-years with over 100,000 miles and you must buy a brand new car.

Cash for Clunkers kicked off their first weekend recently, and we — car accident lawyers and personal injury attorneys — believe that newer cars will limit the amount of injuries caused by car accidents.  There has, however, been some controversy over government funding for the discounted Cash for Clunkers program.

The White House is counting on the “cash for clunkers” rebates to spur vehicle sales at a time when auto makers have been hit particularly hard by the recession.  U.S. auto sales are on pace to total about 10 million vehicles, down from about 13 million in 2008 and 16 million in 2007.  Boosting new-vehicle sales would also help the administration’s efforts to turn around General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC.

Under the program, new-car buyers can get $3,500 or $4,500 in rebates when they trade in older vehicles for more fuel-efficient models.

As car accident attorneys and personal injury lawyers, we believe that older cars are more prone to break down, overheat and have engine problems causing drivers numerous injuries from car accidents.  The safety standards by which new cars must comply with do not effect older cars.  Thus older cars not only increase pollution causing significant injury from breathing in bad air but if a loved one or you find yourself in a car accident it is safer to be in a newer car as older cars are not as safe as their newer predecessors.

Regardless if your car is fresh or a clunker, take your time when it comes to investigating the best car insurance policy for your vehicle.
