The FDA is currently reviewing research on the mixture of caffeine and alcohol as numerous scientific research indicates that people who consume caffeine and alcohol may increase their risk of alcohol-related injuries or other injuries.

A Wake Forest University study published last year found that 24% of college students who drink reported mixing caffeinated beverages and alcohol– such as Red Bull and vodka. The study also found that those who did mix caffeine with alcohol were more likely to experience negative consequences such as an alcohol-related injury, getting into a car with a drunken driver or being taken advantage of sexually.

As car accident lawyers, we urge people over 21 who decide to drink to know your limits.  If you consume alcoholic beverages, you should NEVER drive a car as you are not only putting yourself at risk but other drivers as well.  On average someone is killed by a drunk driver every 45 minutes.

The drinks, which are sold under names such as Joose, Four Loko and Liquid Charge, combine liquor, vodka or another alcoholic beverage with caffeine or other stimulants.

Critics of the products, which include scientists and consumer-advocacy groups, have called for tougher oversight from the Food and Drug Administration, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax, the Trade Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, all of which regulate aspects of alcohol sales and marketing.

In 2008, an estimated 11,773 people died in drunk driving related car crashes—a decline of 9.8 percent from the 13,041 drunk driving related fatalities of 2007.  While these declining fatal DUI car accident statistics are promising, as car accident attorneys, we believe DUI car accident statistics are still not low enough and that there is more we can do to prevent drunk driving accidents in our cities.
