Walkers are vulnerable to pedestrian accidents every day.

Some more popular destinations like beaches, bars and night clubs have increased possibility for pedestrian accidents.  The state of New Jersey has allocated new funds in a move to try and prevent some of these pedestrian accidents from happening.

As pedestrian accident lawyers, we support these programs and laws that are designed with pedestrian safety in mind.

New Jersey state law requires drivers to yield for pedestrians, and a new sting operation wants to make sure this law is followed.

New Jersey lawmakers have assigned $4,000 grants to police who will place “pedestrian decoys” in crosswalks in beach towns of Southern New Jersey — such as North Wildwood, Sea Isle City and Ocean City.  Drivers who do not follow the New Jersey law requiring drivers to yield to pedestrians can be ticketed by a police officer.

The law also states that if a car in front of you is stopped for a pedestrian, you may not pass the car.  A pedestrian also may not “suddenly leave a curb” if an approaching car is so close that it can’t yield.

Many of the Shore towns have added “Yield to pedestrians” signs in crosswalks and elsewhere, but police officers know it’s not that simple.

“It’s a shared responsibility,” said the Longport, N.J., Police Chief. His and other decoys will start working on August 17, 2009 and operate on random days over the next few weeks.

If you want to prevent pedestrian accidents from happening, the general rule is that pedestrians always have the right of way.  Getting hit by an automobile causes injuries like traumatic brain injuries (like concussions) or spinal cord injuries (i.e. paraplegia & quadriplegia).

Always remember to ask yourself this when you’re driving: “Am I really in that big of a hurry?”

Our pedestrian accident lawyers want pedestrians and drivers to be safe when they travel.  Drivers should be cautious when they get to intersections and see people crossing the street, and if there is a law stating drivers must yield, it is only good for everyone’s safety.
