Cell phone usage is one of the top driver distractions.  Distracted driving is the cause of one out of four car accidents daily.  That means 25% of all car accidents are caused by distracted driving.

The statistics don’t lie.  Texting while driving is dangerous and is one of the top causes of car accidents in the U.S.

Highway safety officials are pushing for a stop to car accidents caused by distracted drivers on their cell phones.

Our car accident lawyers have seen that tragic effects of many car accidents caused by a driver who engaged in distracted driving.  In lieu of these alarming statistics many states have already implemented laws that ban cell phone usage — talking and texting — while driving.

A recent meeting between safety highway officials and state legislators called for a national ban on texting while driving.  The Governors Highway Safety Association has adopted this new stance due to statistics — conducted by many organizations — that have shown the increased automobile accident risk posed by drivers who text while driving.

While the ban will be difficult to enforce, the chairman of the association says that it “will send a message to the public that this dangerous practice is unacceptable.  We can begin to change the culture that has permitted distracted driving.”

Numerous studies have shown that when drivers either make phone calls or text while driving they take their eyes off the road for at least five seconds.  Those mere five seconds — if a driver is traveling at at least 65 mph — is enough time for a car to travel the length of a football field.
