The state of Minnesota has settled personal injury cases with all eligible injured persons from the Minnesota Interstate 35 bridge collapse in 2007.

The total sum of the settlements reached was $36.6 million, ranging from $4,500 to more than $2.2 million for 179 injured persons from the accident.

Minnesota law severely limits an injured person’s ability to recover personal injury compensation from the state and they are usually given incentive to settle.  Several personal injury lawsuits against contractors and other firms who worked on the project are still possible.  The damages Minnesota paid out covered both injured persons of the collapse and personal injured family members of those who experienced due to bridge’s collapse, according to Susan Holden, the attorney who led the court-appointed panel administering the state’s pricey compensation fund.

“The panel recognizes these [personal injury] settlements do not fully compensate the survivors for their losses… We only hope that these [wrongful death and injured person’s personal injury settlements] will help to ease their burden,” said Holden.
