A 31-year-old man turned himself into police Tuesday morning in connection with a hit-and-run accident that gravely injured a pedestrian in City Heights.
The pedestrian accident occurred at about 9:15 p.m. Monday when a 66-year-old man was walking in a marked crosswalk on Fairmount Avenue at Myrtle Avenue. He was struck by a Honda heading south on Fairmount and suffered traumatic head and neck injuries. As pedestrian accident attorneys, we know that you may never think it will happen to you but each year, over 60,000 people are killed and 100,000 are injured in pedestrian accidents across the United States. Often times you could be doing nothing wrong, but it is because the drivers are not paying to the road due to driver distractions such as eating while driving or texting while driving.
Witnesses told police they saw the car hit the man in the middle of the intersection and watched as the driver pulled over to the side of the road, opened his door and looked at the injured pedestrian. The man then noticed the bystanders watching him and drove away.
The driver, Alfredo Cruz was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving without a license. “He says he was distracted,” police officers said. “He looked up and saw the pedestrian. There was no explanation as to why he left.”
The increase in the use of cell phones and other electronic devices has greatly contributed to the number of pedestrian accidents that occur each year. Distracted drivers are the leading cause of pedestrian accidents in the United States.
