It looked like a scene from Batman or Superman, but this was no comic book or movie. The heroes in this story were the men and women of local law enforcement.
It all began when a cloud of hazardous gas flew into the air on November 30th, 2009, after a tanker truck rolled over on to its side and spilled the acid it was transporting across country on the highway – putting a sudden halt traffic just outside of Kansas City’s metropolitan area.

Our firm’s semi-truck accident attorneys are well aware of the dangers associated with an auto accident that involves a big truck and its load. Usually the personal injuries involved are catastrophic neck and back injuries, but when acid is involved, that could lead to people getting hurt by means of chemical burn or poisoning if they do not seek medical treatment right away.
With an estimated 45,000 pounds of hydrochloric acid in-tow behind the truck, it is amazing that only about 250 gallons of the acid spilled from the tanker while it was driving on Interstate 35. As the rollover accident occurred, the tanker ruptured, sending a cloud of acidic gas east in the wind.
The Isle of Capri casino was the only location in danger of being harmed by the acid cloud. Patrons of the casino didn’t have to evacuate, however, as they only needed to stay inside until the gas dissolved in order to avoid any personal injuries or wrongful death.
Two police officers and the driver of the truck were transported to a nearby hospital after complaining of skin and throat irritation – among other personal injuries sustained during the semi-truck accident. Environmental contractors and other government agencies have been brought in to contain the last of the spilled acid, but say the crash site is no longer considered an emergency scene.
Our firm’s semi-truck accident attorneys want to remind everyone out there on the road to be careful when you are nearing large trucks with big loads. You never know when an accident can happen, not to mention if the contents of the trailer are biohazards.
