Police say a momentary driver distraction led to a nine-car crash on US-23. The car accident was caused by a driver distraction when the 47-year-old driver of a semi truck reached for a bottle of water on southbound US-23.
“He reached for a bottle of water, looked up, went to the shoulder, and boom, boom, boom, bang, bang, bang, and the noise stopped at nine,” Green Oak Township Police Chief Bob Brookins said.
Our auto accident attorneys know that — at any moment — a fatal automobile accident can occur. If any driver is distracted — talking on a cell phone, checking out a good-looking person in the car next to them or any of the millions of reasons to take one’s eyes off the road — the chances of a car accident go up exponentially.
Brookins said that during the truck accident the semi rear-ended one car, which in turn, had a rear-end auto accident with another vehicle. That car was then pushed into three other vehicles as the semi continued to barrel through the pile and into a guard rail along the median, Brookins said.
The guard rail kept the truck from crossing the median, but the truck then turned and slid into three additional automobiles before they all came to a rest. Thankfully, no personal injuries were life-threatening, but police did issue a careless driving citation to the truck driver that caused the nine-car pileup.
