Two brothers, students at Otay Mesa High School, aged 18 and 16, were killed in Chula Vista, CA on Friday, November 21, 2008. Jason and Daniel Spickerman were passengers in an automobile driven by a third brother when they were involved in an auto accident caused by a suspected unlicensed, drunk driver, Enrique Coronado.
Coronado’s large GMC pickup truck crashed/plowed into the brothers’ Mitsubishi Galant at an intersection in Chula Vista. Coronado was returning to Chula Vista from Mexico after allegedly drinking alcoholic beverages in Tijuana when he was involved in the DUI car accident. Then, he tried to escape from the scene, but was caught by the police a few minutes later.
Our firm’s San Diego car accident lawyers have seen too many cases where an irresponsible person gets behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drunk driving causes tons of car accidents every year, and those accidents can lead to serious injuries like whiplash or traumatic brain injuries.
Because DUI car accidents can be so seriously detrimental, our car accident lawyers have provided a handy DUI prevention resource page to help people get information about different organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving or Alcoholics Anonymous — if you or someone you know may have a drinking problem.
Daniel Spickerman, only 18 years old, was declared dead about three hours later after being taken to San Diego’s Rady Children’s Hospital. His younger brother Jason, 16, was declared brain dead on Saturday afternoon, the 22nd, at Scripps Mercy Hospital. The third brother, who was driving, reportedly sustained only minor injuries.
Coronado was booked on that same Saturday for a felony hit-and-run, DUI, driving without a license, and two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on the 26th.
He faces more than 41 years in state prison if he is convicted of these crimes. He also has an unsavory history in crime: he has been arrested for smuggling immigrants over the border, convicted of possession of marijuana with intention to sell, and convicted of a 1996 robbery.
Daniel and Jason were both seniors at Otay Mesa High School. Daniel had had plans to attend ITT Technical Institute after graduation. Their lives were cut too short because of this tragic drunk driving car accident.
This firm does not tolerate anybody who drives under the influence (DUI). Not only did Coronado allegedly make the decision to DUI, he killed 2 young people, and then tried to avoid the consequences by fleeing the scene of car accident. Our firm’s San Diego car accident lawyers strongly believe the law needs to bring justice to Coronado for the results of this preventable DUI car accident.
