This past holiday, fewer drivers drove drunk (DUI). The California Highway Patrol arrested fewer drivers for DUI during the New Year’s holiday weekend compared to last year, but there were also more auto accident wdeaths in both San Diego County and statewide.
CHP arrested 103 motorists in San Diego County under DUI suspicion between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Sunday, compared with 122 DUI arrests under the same period last year. Statewide, CHP arrested 1,343 drivers for DUI after handcuffing 1,596 the year before.
Our firm’s experienced San Diego car accident lawyers are encouraged by these new DUI statistics. Maybe the years of holiday crack-downs on DUIs are finally paying off, and people are beginning to make better decisions and getting in fewer wrongful death incidents because of mixing drinking and driving.
Unfortunately, five car accident-related deaths were reported in San Diego County, while last year’s holiday weekend saw just two auto accident deaths. Statewide, 30 people died in a fatal car accident after 26 people died a year ago.
This is the news that really hurts, because DUI accidents are preventable simply by making the smart choice not to be intoxicated while operating a motor vehicle.
The San Diego car accident lawyers at our firm have seen how families are heartbroken with pain and suffering after a deadly car accident. While the DUI statistics are indeed encouraging, these car accident wrongful death statistics are another reminder of the various dangers that each person faces on the roadways. We must all always take great caution on the roads, especially around the holidays.
The holiday weekend should be a great time for a family. We should all be careful to ensure that the holiday weekend does not mark the end of a family member’s life.
