A suspected drunk driver was arrested in connection to a wrong-way car accident that occurred Sunday morning on Interstate 15 near Poway. The freeway was shut down as the wrong-way driver crashed into two vehicles, causing personal injury to multiple victims involved in the crash.
The freeway was shut down for more than one hour, according to a fire department official.
A CHP dispatcher said it was unclear as to whether or not the driver crashed into the vehicles, or if his wrong-way driving caused the other vehicles to collide into each other.
Although the wrong-way car accident caused injury to the victims, the suspected drunk driver was not injured.
As the wrong-way driver was headed southbound on I-15 near the West Bernardo Drive exit, he collided with a medium-sized SUV. The crash caused the SUV to hit the center divider, dismantling the vehicle into pieces. A secondary vehicle was also involved in the accident moments later.
“[The SUV] was wrapped up like a Christmas present,” said San Diego Fire Captain Chris Babler.
Wrong way driving & personal injury
The woman driving the silver SUV suffered facial lacerations and possible spinal cord injury. Babler said the woman, however, refused to be transported to the hospital.
The second victim involved in the car accident sat on the edge of the freeway with blood dripping from his face, but again, refused to be transported to the hospital.
If you’ve been injured in a car accident, consider taking the ride to the hospital to evaluate your injuries, especially if you have feelings of confusion, back pain, neck pain, lacerations, and especially if you are bleeding.
Often, those who are involved in a car accident experience temporary feelings of shock, and are unable to evaluate their personal health on-the-spot.
