Driving on the road, you have plenty of things to worry about: cars, pedestrians, and the freak tornado — depending where you live — but another thing to watch out for is loose objects in trucks. A couple in Washington averted injury after an unsecured tool flew out the back of a pickup truck.

A couple in Washington had an unfriendly encounter with something that smashed into their car’s windshield. Normally when you hear that phrase, you think of bugs. Maxine and Pete Henning wish it were a bug. What their windshield was greeted with was a four-foot pick axe that flew from the bed of a pickup truck they were driving behind.
While driving their Mercedes sport-utility vehicle southbound on Interstate 405 near Kirkland, Washington, the loose object came flying out of no where crashing into their windshield nearly causing personal injuries. Needless to say, the experience was unexpected.
“All of a sudden I saw something fly up in the air, looked like an ice climbing axe,” Henning told KCPQ 13 in Washington. ”Next thing there was a loud pop, and it came through the windshield and got wedged in the seat between the two of us.”
Washington State Patrol Trooper T.M. John said the loose object could have easily taken off either of their heads. A 911 caller actually saw it happen and was able to describe the truck where the pick axe came from. As of now, the truck, a late 1980′s or early 1990′s with wood panels, still hasn’t been found.
Loose objects in cars like those that cause personal injuries are considered serious crimes if they hurt others. Convictions result in a year in jail on top of fines that can total up to $5,000. Loose objects are serious hazards for other drivers and passengers. Serious injuries could have resulted from the pick axe itself or if it caused a car accident.
Always make sure you lock everything down tight to prevent accidents like these.
