A car accident caused by a teenager’s driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs has led to a wrongful death lawsuit filed against him by the family of another teenager who died in the crash.
Onofrio J. Lorusso, 18, is being sued by the family of 17-year-old Cameron Godee after the Ford sport-utility vehicle Lorusso was driving went off a road in St. Charles, Illinois and hit two trees. Lorusso was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash.
Our wrongful death attorneys feel like parents, sometimes, when these car accidents happen. We are disappointed in teenagers who choose to exercise their freedoms with making poor decisions. Teenage drivers need to be even more cautious than adult drivers because they don’t have the experience that older drivers have.
Teenagers should also refrain from doing anything that can potentially make driving even more difficult – like driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, for example.
Police officials say Lorusso was driving with a blood-alcohol level almost three times the legal limit AND tested positive for marijuana. The lawsuit accuses Lorusso of negligence while driving and a “willful and wanton disregard for the safety of (Godee) and other passengers in his vehicle.”
Two other teenagers in the back seat of the car were injured to go along with Godee’s wrongful death. Godee and Lorusso were a few days away from graduating from St. Charles East High School.
Lorusso has pleaded not guilty to reckless homicide, driving under the influence of drugs, aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs. If Lorusso is convicted, he faces seven years in prison.
Our wrongful death lawyers believe there is no excuse for anyone to attempt to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Some teenagers have a sense of invincibility and feel they can do anything without getting hurt, but they often learn the hard way how untrue that is.
