On Saturday, January 4, 2009, 38-year old Kathy Slater’s automobile was driven off the road by another driver in a road rage accident that ended up fatal.

Slater, a mother of five and driving with an expired license, pulled her car out of a White Castle in Indianapolis just before 2 a.m. when an incident with an unknown automobile driver ended in a deadly road rage-fueled car accident.  Slater, awaiting a court date the next month for driving a car with a suspended license, had two other passengers in the car with her when she apparently cut off another auto after running a red light.

The car accident attorneys who work at our firm know that when tensions run high, there is a greater chance of reckless driving occurring, consequently raising your risk for catastrophic injuries and making a mistake behind the wheel, such as running a red light

This led to a heated exchange between the two cars until the other driver did the unthinkable.

“One [witness] thought he had cut her off, she lost control,” Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Lieutenant Jeff Duhamell said.

The other driver fled the scene and police are currently looking for anyone with information that can lead to his arrest.  The police are hopeful that city crime cameras (specifically one located just a block from the accident site) will help them identify not only the car but also the suspect himself.

The driver was described as a Hispanic man wearing a skull cap who drove a white Nissan with tinted windows. They are hoping that anyone with information relevant to this deadly car accident will contact Crime Stoppers.

The sad thought in all of this is that Slater’s death and the auto accident itself could have been easily prevented.  The two passengers in her car, 44-year old Angela Lamb and 19-year old Clifton Benson, were both hospitalized for medical treatment. While Benson is in fair condition, Lamb was left in critical condition. If these two enraged drivers had just let things go, Slater would be able to go home and see her children, whom must now grow up without their mother.

But instead, Slater and her unknown adversary let road rage turn into a fatal auto accident.  One life has been lost, another will end up in jail and a passenger clings to her life.  It is vital to know what is important and what is not while on the roads.

Our firm’s car accident attorneys are concerned with the safety of everyone on the road.  Road rage is a serious problem that needs to be addressed as it endangers the lives of everyone on the road.  They do not believe that a person with anger management issues, that affect the ability to safely operate an automobile, should not be allowed on the road.  Therefore, always remember that turning to road rage is never the right way.
