Whether it’s falling off a bike or the monkey bars or it’s slipping and falling while running, if you are a parent you will see plenty of children’s injuries. But did you also know that you should be extra careful to prevent them from getting injured in a car accident?
In a recent study by San Diego County’s Health and Human Services Agency and Safe Kids San Diego the report concluded that for children ages 5 to 14 car accidents are the leading cause of wrongful death.
In order to combat this shocking finding, the agency stresses the importance of parents making sure their children are properly restrained in car seats and seat belts are used correctly. Furthermore, children should be only allowed to sit in the back seat until they are 13-years of age.
Our car accident lawyers have all to often seen the tragic effects car accidents have on families. If only simple safety precautions were taken — such as the ones mentioned above — many children’s injuries and deaths would be avoided.
In addition to car accidents, other causes of children’s injuries and wrongful death include:
- For infants, suffocation and choking is the leading cause of injury and wrongful death.
- For children ages 1 to 4, drowning is the number cause of wrongful death. The leading cause of injury was slips and falls, poisoning and burns.
Our personal injury lawyers know that many of these children’s injuries could be avoided if parents and children both were taught proper safety techniques. For example child-restraint and helmet laws have helped reduce certain kinds of injuries.
Sometimes the simplest safety precautions such as never leaving your child unattended, can prevent an injury or even wrongful death.
