Second-impact Syndrome

Suffering from one concussion can be dangerous enough for anyone, but what about getting two concussions in a short period of time?  According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 1.5 million people die every year from a concussion in the United States.  In some cases, the death was caused by something called second-impact syndrome.

Second-impact syndrome (SIS) is considered a rare condition because the exact cause is unknown.  When you acquire second-impact syndrome, your brain swells rapidly and potentially fatally after you suffer a second concussion before the symptoms of a previous concussion have subsided.  The first concussion doesn’t necessarily have to be severe to cause SIS, either.

Most cases of SIS happen in young people.  Young athletes are especially vulnerable.  In order to prevent SIS, many guidelines (i.e. Cantu concussion guidelines, Colorado Medical Center concussion guidelines) have been developed to keep young athletes from coming back to playing before they’re safe.
