Reports from health officials say knock-off condoms produced in some factories provide very little protection and can cause the spread of diseases.  China’s latest products liability problem can damage the thought that using a condom constitutes safe sex.

One sex shop owner, Wan Yunsu, stocks her shelf in Beijing with a domestic brand, but she is weary about putting them up because they might be defective products.

“Some manufacturers are cutting corners,” Yunsu said.  “And it’s all about the profit.”

Back in November, health investigators in China’s Hunan province gave details about a raid last July at an underground workshop where they found workers lubricating condoms with vegetable oil in unsterile conditions — then sold the counterfeits as brand name products.  In 2008, police conducted a similar raid in the Zhejiang province where half a million defective condoms were confiscated.

Authorities in China have estimated that about one-third of condoms used in some parts of China are fake even though improvements have been made in food and drug regulation.  Those same counterfeits have made their way to the United States.  In 2008, law enforcement in New York seized millions of fake Trojan-brand condoms that were sold in small discount stores in New York, Texas and Virginia.

The drug Rituxan is used to treat lymphoma, a cancer of immune-system cells.  It costs thousands of dollars per treatment and had U.S. sales of $2.6 billion in 2008, with more than a million people using it, and may not know the potential products liability hazards linked with it.

However, a study released in March in the medical journal “Blood” linked Rituxan to 57 cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalitis, or PML, between 1997 and 2008.  In PML, the white brain matter decays, provoking memory loss, speech disorder and disorientation.   Of those, 51 died and the median time between their diagnosis and wrongful death was about two months.

The cause of PML is unclear.  However, Rituxan is one of several immune-suppressing drugs that have been linked to it.   In April, Raptiva, an immunosuppressant for psoriasis from Genentech, was voluntarily withdrawn from the market after three cases of PML were confirmed.
