The holidays is a time for giving and this year, the San Diego Police Department made good on their promise to give drunk-drivers a lump of coal that they would not forget.

According the current report, which has only the 78-hour Christmas weekend’s statistics, 67 driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) arrests were made, but now that number is almost up to 500 DUI arrests for the entire region of San Diego County since the SDPD upped their resources on December 16, 2009.

Our firm’s San Diego car accident lawyers are encouraged by these statistics, especially since they are down from last year.  When someone decides to get behind the wheel of a car, motorcycle, or truck and they are intoxicated by drugs or alcohol, they are just asking for trouble — legally and possibly to other drivers on the road — to come to them.  Hopefully, efforts like this will deter reckless drivers from making poor decisions.

From December 16th to December 26th, San Diego County law enforcement officials upped last year’s record of DUI arrests from 323 to 496.

During the holiday weekend, up and down the state of California, there was an overall decline in DUI arrests, with 2009 bringing in 1,104 compared with 1,397 from the previous year.  Wrongful deaths, however, were down statewide with only 22 people dying on the road from 37 deaths in 2008.

The car accident attorneys at our San Diego firm know that this is a sign of good things to come.  They hope that everyone is aware that DUI accidents are preventable — 100% of the time — and that you will not make bad decisions as you ring in the new year.

Here’s to a happy and safe 2010!
